Kaiser Chiefs to open new Leeds arena
Kaiser Chiefs are set to play a special one-off concert on September 13th, 2013 to celebrate the opening of Leeds Arena.
Kaiser Chief Simon Rix said, "Having played everywhere in Leeds from the Duchess (RIP) to Elland Road, we are massively happy that Leeds has built somewhere new for us to play. Looking forward to opening Leeds arena next year, it's going to be bigger than Ken Bates' legal bill."
Leeds' most successful music export, Kaiser Chiefs is the only local act to appear at the Arena's opening. Kaiser Chiefs Return To Leeds will come at the end of a busy 2013 for the band, due to headline their own Sold Out UK Tour in February, ahead of a run of dates in South America (including two Main Stage slots at the Lollapalloza Festivals in Brazil and Chile) and in the summer they are set to join Green Day's UK & European Tour as Very Special Guests.
The band's Mercury Prize nominated debut, 'Employment' was written in Leeds in 2003/2004, it went on to win Album of the Year gongs at the Ivor Novello and NME Awards. In 2006 Kaiser Chiefs picked up 3 Brit Awards ahead of 'Yours Truly, Angry Mob' (2007) featuring the pan-European airplay hit 'Ruby'. The Mark Ronson produced 'Off With Their Heads' came in 2008, followed by 'The Future Is Medieval' (2011) with an innovative 'build your own album' platform, the campaign scooped a Q Award and the coveted Yellow Pencil from the D&AD Creative Awards.
Other stand out moments from the last year saw Kaiser Chiefs at the Olympic Closing Ceremony, performing a cover of The Who's 'Pinball Wizard', a storming set at the Reading & Leeds Festivals (back on the Main Stage for a third time in 6 years) alongside the release of the bands first singles collection 'Souvenir: The Singles 2004-2012'.
